Simple, meaningful Mother’s Day moments that matter most
As Mother’s Day approaches,
I find myself drawn back to a time when the day meant one thing — breakfast in bed for Mom.
It always began with an earlier-than-expected wake-up call, usually to the sound of quiet bickering in the kitchen. Who would mix the pancakes? Who would flip them? I must admit, I was always slightly suspicious of those “flipped” pancakes… especially after discovering that some had taken a brief detour onto the floor, where our ever-hopeful dogs stood ready for a quick nibble before they were returned to the pan — lovingly finished, of course.
And while the joy of creating the meal was clearly the highlight, the concept of cleaning up never quite made it onto the agenda. To say the kitchen resembled the aftermath of a small natural disaster would not be an exaggeration — but somehow, none of that mattered.
Because what I remember most is the pride.
The carefully picked flowers from the garden.
The tray, thoughtfully arranged.
The pancakes, presented with a generous dusting of icing sugar (perhaps strategically applied to disguise the dogs’ earlier involvement).
And then, of course, the moment they arrived — beaming — carrying their masterpiece.
There’s something timeless about a beautifully prepared breakfast in bed — not because it’s perfect, but because it’s made with love.
For me, the true luxury was simple:
A warm cup of tea in bed, a few snuggles, and being completely, unconditionally loved.
I must admit, I’m not usually a pancakes kind of person… but when they were made with that much love and devotion, they became my favourite breakfast in the world.
